Biographical Note
Mark Demsteader was born in Manchester in 1963, and lives and works in Oldham. From 1980 to 1984, he attended both Oldham College of Art and the Rochdale College of Art. In 1993 he joined the Slade Summer School and subsequently undertook visual studies in Rochdale throughout the academic year 1997/98. He was awarded the Lyceum Prize in 1981 and the Sidney Andrews Scholarship in 1982, whilst recent solo exhibitions include one at the Bury City Gallery in 1998 and one at Dukes 92 Castlefield, Manchester in 1997. Mark Demsteader's work has developed from a fascination with the human form and an obsession with classical themes. These preoccupations can be seen in recent paintings where his close observation combines with surface texture and composition to create beautiful and powerful representations of the human figure.
